Need to choose a topic? Look at SIRS Researcher List of Leading Issues

360+ current  Leading Issues cover the pros and cons on the most researched and debated social issues. These issues are organized from major topical areas into Leading Issues, and then broken down to Pro/Con subtopics.  Each Pro/Con subtopic provides a brief overview, critical thinking questions, timeline along with articles, websites, videos, multimedia graphics, charts, maps, statistics, primary sources and government documents.

Remember:

  • Use the Quick cite feature for database articles
  • EBSCO citations can be found on the right hand side under Tools - Cite
  • Differentiate reference sources from books
  • Articles in reference books often have the author's name at the end of the article

Search Strategies

For the Library Catalog

  • Type topic, then click Subject
  • If you get zero or few results, refine your search then click Keyword.

For SIRS Researcher

  • Look for a topic under Leading Issues section
    • Read the Topic Overview
    • Then read the Pro/Con Issues and Essential Questions
    • Choose an Essential Question, if more than one.
    • Read the 3 articles representing the Yes and No sides
    • Conduct additional research if needed
  • Or type in your Subject or Keywords
    • Read article summaries, then select desired articles or modify search keywords
  • Click Print View near top of page to print articles

For Student Resources in Context

  • Type topic in box, then click Search
  • Select an article or two under Reference to get background information
    • Limit your search (left-hand side) if needed
  • Select additional articles, video clips, websites, etc. under other categories in order to get more detailed information
  • To print articles, click the Print icon under Tools on right side of page
