Timeline Considerations

1754: French and Indian WarMany native peoples fought with the French and their colonies. The Iroquois Confederacy fought with British and their colonists.

1804/5: Lewis and Clark Expedition -  Lewis and Clark go on an expedition to “unknown” territories.  President Jefferson’s goal was to find new routes across America and establish good relationships with Native tribes

1830: Indian Removal Act- Act aimed at granting land west of the Mississippi River to tribes who agreed to give up their current land. 

1838: Trail of TearsCherokee tribes were forced by Georgia state militia move to the plains of Mississippi. Between 3 and 4 thousand Cherokee out of the 14/15,000 died during along the way.

1851: Indian Appropriations Act-  Law passed by Congress creating the reservation system. Native Americans were not allowed to leave their reservations without permission.

1879: Carlisle Indian SchoolPennsylvania- The first boarding school for Native Americans

1890: Wounded Knee MassacreThe result of the government’s fear of the Ghost Dance spiritual movement.

1924: Indian Citizenship Act- The Indian Citizenship Act confirmed citizenship of  Native Americans born in US territories.

1962: Voting Rights ActNative Americans gain the right to vote on a state-by-state basis.

1968Indian Civil Rights Act-  Law signed by President Johnson granting Native American tribes many of the benefits included in the Constitutional Bill of Rights. 

2010: “Apology to Native Peoples of the United States”- Page 45 of this bill, Section  8113 -an apology is noted to Native Peoples, followed by a statement that the government is not admitting liability for any lawsuits from Native American tribes.
